We have had a fantastic visit to the Safety Carousel. We enjoyed learning about first aid, e-safety, water safety, fire safety, electricity dangers and road safety. As well as learning how to keep ourselves safe, we are pleased to say our school won the fire safety quiz! We enjoyed learning about different ways we can keep ourselves safe. Wearing 'beer goggles' we also thought about the dangers of alcohol.
We have had a fantastic day at Newcastle University. We loved having a tour of the university and exploring what it has to offer. We all graduated at the end of the day!
On Thursday afternoon it was our Harvest Festival which we performed as a whole school in the hall. We worked with class 3 to put together a performance about how it can be difficult for people in various different countries around the world to grow and access food. We all had an individual speaking part and class 3 did the actions to go with our words.
All of the kind donations that we received for our festival will be donated to Willington food bank to help people in our local community. Today we visited a Sikh Gurdwara in Newcastle as part of our RE topic for this term on Sikhism. We also visited The Great North Museum in Newcastle to gain a deeper understanding into the lives of the Ancient Egyptians, who we are studying as part of our History, Art and DT subjects.
While we were at the Gurdwara we explored the dabar sahib (prayer room) and were offered biscuits and juice in the langar room (food hall). We were shown around and given a talk by Mr Singh who managed to answer all of our questions. Our visit provided us with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding into the importance of the Gurdwara and experience some Sikh traditions and routines. After visiting the Gurdwara we moved onto The Great North Museum where we spent the afternoon exploring the Ancient Egyptian exhibit. While we were there we had a go at decoding hieroglyphics from the book of the dead, building pyramids out of lego and wood and exploring artefacts which gave us a greater insight into what life was like in Ancient Egyptian times. We all enjoyed our busy day. Take a look at our photos! A huge well done to the Year 6 children. We have received our SATs results today and we are very proud of all the children's hard work.
We have been talking about how we are all unique and why our differences are a positive thing!! We have produced our own poems. We hope you enjoy reading them . . .
We have been learning all about the human body. This week, we planned an investigation to see what happens to our heart rate when we exercise. It was really tricky to find our pulse! We discussed how to plan a fair test and used our planning boards to decide upon our methodology. Despite our best efforts, we did get a few unusual results, which suggest it would be beneficial to repeat our investigation again!!
We had a workshop all about alcohol awareness. We talked about the dangers of alcohol and even got to wear 'beer goggles'. . .
We had a visit from our local PSCO officers from Crook Police Station. They spoke to us about criminal damage, bullying and staying safe when using social media; they encouraged us to think about the consequences when we make the wrong choices!
In our art sessions we have examining and learning from the work of a range of local artists. So far we have developed our sketching skills in our pencil drawings, and have used oil pastels to recreate landscapes and even some abstract artwork!
This week we have been looking at work by an artist known as Jenny Ulyatt. She uses pastels and watercolours to capture iconic images from the local area. We have examined the techniques she uses and have produced our very own master pieces; do you like our work? We have been talking about 'bullying' and how it is defined. We also talked about strategies for dealing with bullying behaviour. We are making comic strips about this topic. We have also begun to make our own videos about cyberbullying.
