On Thursday, we visited Willington Community Action Centre to look at a very special art exhibition. All of the work was created by Jewish children at the Terezin Ghetto during the Second World War and it is currently on loan for a short time from a Jewish museum in Prague. It made us feel very sad to discover the hardships that the children faced and how most of them tragically died shortly after creating their artwork. While it was very sad, we were all also fascinated to see the artwork and read children's poems. After looking around the gallery, we all created our own artwork and acrostic poem about life in a concentration camp during WW2. During our visit, we were joined by Baroness Armstrong, who was very impressed with our outstanding behaviour and our fantastic work. She decided to award prizes to Kieran and Ciaran for their drawings and Rhianna and Courtney for their poems. Well done everyone for setting an excellent example for our school.

Since last Monday, we have have been learning about the First World War centenary and the importance of Remembrance. We watched War Horse and wrote letters in role as a soldier, made poppies from different materials, read newspaper extracts from WW1, took part in an online assembly from the memorial at the Tower of London, wrote about why we have Remembrance Day and we were even presented with a special commemorative coin in assembly by the town mayor. On 11th November each year, people remember those who have died fighting in wars and conflicts. This year we are commemorating the centenary of World War I. The prompt this week is:
…Remember… You might like to write about how it felt to be left at home worrying; you may want to write about how it felt to go away from your loved ones and fight in a foreign land; you may like to write a poem about how you feel on Remembrance Day. As always you have 100 words. Please think carefully and seriously about your work. We have all had a wonderful day at the Oriental Museum to learn more about life in ancient Egypt. As well as having lots of fun, we learned a lot more about our history topic. We investigated ancient artefacts, explored the galleries, mummified Declan (who pretended to be a pharaoh) and even saw two real mummies! Our behaviour was outstanding and we were very proud when the staff said that they wished every class was like us! |
